Less Is More: A Stylish and Progressive Expression of Minimalism

The most important element of the shoot is the inherent celebration of ‘less’. Many readers have come to expect extravagance and overly complicated sets for editorial fashion shoots; heavily ornamented outfits; over-the-top hair and makeup. It can overpower our senses. It can overload the brain. Sometimes we need to cleanse the palate; that was the uniqueness of this shoot.

This story was a celebration of minimalism, that beautiful artistic genre that some of my favorites (Stella, Morris and Anne Truitt) made their own. Meanwhile, in music, minimalism is a call for repetition and iteration, uncomplicated, yet pleasing. By definition, minimalism is synonymous with that which is spare or stripped to its essentials. With barely-there makeup, highlighting the model’s enchanting eyes, and decked in simple black and white, Cumberbatch succeeded at creating layers that are not visible to the simple eye. These shots require attention to the details. It may all seem bare, but these fabrics begged to be touched. Bravo.
